The Washington Whips were a charter member of the NASL in 1968, but only lasted a year. The Washington Darts (ASL champs in 1968 & 1969) switched to the NASL in 1970 and went all the way to the finals in their inaugural year, losing to Rochester. The Darts lasted two years.
DC decided give the NASL a third try in 1974 with the Washington Diplomats. They lasted long enough to play 9 games against the Kicks from 1976 to 1981 before folding. The Kicks won 7 of those games with Ron Futcher tallying 11 goals against the Dips, including a hat trick at RFK Stadium and a 4-goal game at the Met in Bloomington.
The fourth NASL team DC hosted was Team America in 1983 – they finished in last place.
In the lower division leagues, the DC area was home to the Washington Cavaliers, FC Washington, Washington/Maryland Stars, and a second coming of the Dips. The Washington Mustangs played in the USISL from 1994-1996 but never faced the Thunder.
DC United has been around longer than all the previous teams combined. Hopefully the Loons can recreate the dominance the Kicks had against the Dips. Go Loons!

DC United are one of only three original MLS teams still playing with their original name and colors. Only New England Revolution also have their original badge. DC United’s badge is fairly similar to their original, however. Since the Revolution don’t visit TCF this season, tonight is our most classic MLS opponent.

        Interesting! Who’s the 3rd team?

Columbus Crew: same name and colors and but substantially revised badge. No longer men in hats.
That’s a lot of teams from the Darts!

Can we play DC every week?
