AC Milan – Chelsea FC Match Set for Record-Breaking Attendance

Records are made to be broken and that’s exactly what will happen on August 3 when AC Milan faces off against Chelsea FC at US Bank Stadium. Relevent Sports, the parent company of the International Champions Cup competition, will report this morning that they have sold over 55,000 tickets to the event.

The former all-time attendance record for Minnesota soccer has been in place for 38 years. It was set when the Minnesota Kicks drew 46,370 to Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington on June 13, 1978. Like the AC Milan – Chelsea FC midweek matchup, the Kicks game was played midweek (on a Tuesday night). The opponents were the New York Cosmos and both teams had earned reputations as being two of the old NASL’s best teams. Despite the large crowd supporting the Kicks, they lost to the Cosmos 4-2.*

The preseason friendly between AC Milan and Chelsea FC is part of the International Champions Cup competition that takes place every summer in the U.S. It is also a landmark event as it will be the first game of any kind played in new US Bank Stadium that was recently completed at a cost of $1.061 billion. The stadium seats more than 66,000.

Making the number of tickets sold even more remarkable is that Minnesota United will also be playing a league game that very same evening in Blaine, Minn. Relevent Sports had previously reported to FiftyFive. One, that the majority of tickets sold were from the Twin Cities metropolitan area. This bodes well for Minnesota United when they move to MLS and have a soccer-specific stadium of their own in the Midway area of St. Paul.

AC Milan and Chelsea FC will be flying into the Twin Cities on Thursday night and will be training at undisclosed locations as they continue to work on the preseason fitness.

Real grass will be laid over the artificial turf on Friday giving it time to settle in. Relevent Sports is bringing in an national expert this time to avoid the issues they had in 2014 with dangerous seams in the sod that was laid at TCF Bank Stadium.

Both teams have announced their squads traveling to the U.S.

    AC Milan
Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Gabriel, Alessandro Livieri, Diego Lopez
Defenders: Ignazio Abate, Luca Antonelli, Davide Calabria, Mattia De Sciglio, Rodrigo Ely, Gabriel Paletta, Alessio Romagnoli, Jherson Vergara, Ivan De Santis

Attackers: Carlos Bacca, Luiz Adriano, Alessandro Matri, Jérémy Menez, M’baye Niang, Suso, Lucas Vidolini

    Chelsea FC

Defenders: Branislav Ivanović, Gary Cahill, John Terry, César Azpilicueta, Kurt Zouma, Baba Rahman, Matthew Miazga, Michael Hector, Ola Aina
Midfielders: Cesc Fabregas, Oscar, Nemanja Matić, Willian, Kenedy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N’Golo Kanté, Nathaniel Chalobah
Forwards: Eden Hazard, Pedro, Juan Cuadrado, Loïc Rémy, Diego Costa, Michy Batshuayi, Bertrand Traoré, Victor Moses

*A few diligent readers drew our attention to the May 29, 1984 match the Minnesota Strikers played against the Tampa Bay Rowdies that drew 56,621. This match was double-billed as a Beach Boys concert, so it has an asterisk next to it as being called the largest attendance for a “soccer match.”

Beach Boys in Duluth on July 8th 1984 attracted about 5000 people, they hadn’t released new material in several years and the only hit they had in the 80’s was Kokomo and that wasn’t released until 1988. David Lee Roth didn’t cover California Girls’ till 1985.

I can’t wait to watch this. I want to see how the Vikings Stadium looks on TV and I want to see that Minnesota crowd!

Also on August 3rd, and also in the evening, is the St Paul City Council public comment meeting on the soccer stadium. With two games going in town, it is unlikely any pro-stadium folk will be in attendance. People opposed to any issue always show up in more force than people in favor of an issue. My gut is having doubts about the stadium and MLS in 2017…. Asking soccer fans to put city council attendance on top of their list for this night will be fruitless. I honestly think the Loons should move their game to the afternoon. Keep the channel TV29 time slot and delay broadcast. But this is all for a separate topic which I am not allowed to start on NP2.
As for attendance… yes.. the Minnesota Strikers in ’84 had the largest crowd. Brian Kidd scored in the 1-0 win against Tampa Bay Rowdies (with the great Wegerle brothers on the Rowdy roster). For Minnesota it was Kidd, Bob Bolitho, Dwight Lodeweges, Bruce Miller, Carl Strong, John McGrane, Thomas Rongen (the same coach of last years’ NASL Rowdies!), Ken Fogarty, Ray Hudson, Godfrey Ingram, Tino Lettierii in goal, and…. Alan Willey!.
On that same May 28th, 1984 night, the Cosmos played Barcelona in a friendly at Giant stadium and drew only 37,600 fans.
      But Brian’s 1978 game isn’t even #2……
In 1976, the Kicks averaged over 23,000 per game (number 2 in the league behind the Sounders in the Kingdome). They even had higher attendance than the Cosmos with Pele (at Yankee Stadium). That year at least 3 of the Kicks games were over 40,000. The first was in June against the Cosmos — Pele’s first game in Minnesota. The second was in August against the Sounders — the last regular season game of the season. And on August 25th, they hosted the San Jose Earthquakes for the conference championship and won 3-1 with 49,500+ in attendance. It was a Triple AAA night as Alan West, Ade Coker, and Ace Ntsoelengoe scored for the Kicks; with the great Ilija Mitic scoring for San Jose (who had a roster full of Yugoslavians). Future coach Geoff Barnett was in goal with Frank Spraggon, Sam Bick, Alan Merrick, Ron Futcher, Steve Litt, Peter Brine, Ron Webster and…… Alan Willey, the only player to also play in the ’84 game.
Minnesota’s international friendly in ’76 was against Glasgow Rangers!!!
So in Minneapolis and Blaine people will watch soccer on August 3rd, short term enjoyment — and in St. Paul the future of pro-soccer will take a mighty kick in the gut, long term setback.

Love all this information. Can you please provide me with some links so I can reference this for future articles and information?
As to the St. Paul City Council, the Planning Commission and their public hearing on Aug. 3rd. I have been attending many of these public meetings from the beginning and gauging public sentiment through different means. I also attended nearly every CAC meeting. While there are some vocal opponents to the plan which there will always be and especially in sleepy St. Paul who seem to have a lot of boomers who want little to no change to progress their city, it has wide spread city council support and Mayor Coleman will be shepherding this through to completion. Everything has passed all the departments and I expect no problems here either.
I also expect the legislature to have their special session in August and all the political insiders I’ve talked to feel things are set to move through the legislature quickly making it a short session. But of course with politics, one should never assume anything, right?

Brian, I replied and discovered the reply, like many other posts I’ve made since NP2 started, is stuck in the “pending fifty five one” approval. I guess i’m not allowed to post the links. If you could, have the moderator release the message. Also have the moderator either release, or delete the dozen or so other posts stuck in the pending status. Thanks.

You will need a 30,000 cap stadium within three years.
