Minnesota Migration: A weekly recap of Minnesotans in the pros.
In a busy week Teal Bunbury scored a brace against the Cosmos in midweek Open Cup action, Calum Mallace returned from injury for the Montreal Impact after nearly three months and Kassey Kallman nears 3,000 consecutive minutes in the NWSL.
Teal Bunbury found his form during New England’s Open Cup game against the NASL’s New York Cosmos. Bunbury played the full 90 for the first time since April and rewarded his team by scoring two goals. In the 43rd minute Bunbury collected a long ball at the corner of the box. After a couple of step-overs he pushed the ball to his right and slammed a shot into the upper corner at the near post. The teams traded goals to a 2-2 score line, but in the 83rd minute Bunbury and Kei Kamara connected for the first time this year when Kamara’s pass led Bunbury into the box where he slipped his shot past the keeper to send the Revolution to the next round.
It was a different story for the Revolution when they faced the Montreal Impact in regular season play, losing by the same 3-2 scoreline they had just benefited from. Bunbury started the game and saw a lot of the ball during his 85 minute shift, but he was unable to replicate his offensive performance. Bunbury took only one shot and struggled once again to connect with any crosses. Defensively, Bunbury racked up 4 recoveries, 2 tackles and 2 interceptions.
Also seeing time in the game was Calum Mallace who entered as a sub in the 61st minute. This marked Mallace’s first appearance for the Impact since a nine minute shift on April 9th. Mallace did well to help Montreal hold onto their lead with three clearances inside of the penalty box and his usual accurate passing. Mallace’s play time should remain fairly consistent at least until Marco Donadel returns from injury.
After Boston’s 7-1 loss to Western New York Flash last week, the Breakers needed to regroup and recover quickly to prevent falling further away from the rest of the league. Unfortunately Boston was unable to come away with any points against Seattle Reign FC, losing 2-0. Kassey Kallman once again played the full 90 as a left center back and in the process is now the current leader in consecutive minutes played in the NWSL. Kallman has played 2,880 straight minutes over the course of three seasons and with Whitney Engen probably joining the USWNT for the Olympics, her experience will be heavily relied on in the coming weeks.
Eric Miller was an unused substitute in the Colorado Rapids’ 2-1 loss to FC Dallas in the Open Cup, but he was back in the starting lineup for the team’s league game against the Portland Timbers. Miller continued his rotation across the back four with a full shift at right back. After earning an early yellow card, Miller finished the game with 5 clearances, 2 recoveries and 1 tackle to help the Rapids on the way to the shutout in a 0-0 draw.
Cat Parkhill was an unused substitute in Kansas City FC’s 2-0 loss to the Washington Spirit
Tyler David did not make the bench for St. Louis FC in their 1-0 loss to Swope Park Rangers
