Minnesota Migration: A weekly recap of Minnesotans in the pros.
Tyler David is back in the starting lineup, Miller provides support to an injury ridden defense, and Mallace looks to solidify his role in a shuffling midfield.
After playing just 15 total minutes so far in the month of July, Tyler David returned to Saint Louis FC’s starting lineup in the center of the midfield for the first time since late May and was gifted his first assist of the season in a 2-1 win over the Colorado Springs Switchbacks. In the 35th minute midfielder Chad Bond sent a free kick into the box where it was knocked down by a Colorado Springs player off of David and to defender James Musa who slipped it by the keeper. David had a chance to get his first goal of the season when he was nearly played through behind the defense in the 67th minute, but David was a just a step too slow and couldn’t collect the ball. David put in a solid performance on both sides of the ball and hopefully that will mean more time on the field.
Teal Bunbury was left off the game day roster for New England’s PK shootout victory over the Philadelphia Union in the quarterfinals of the US Open Cup on Wednesday, but went the full 90 in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire over the weekend. The game served as a preview to the Open Cup semi-final in which the Revolution will host the Fire. Bunbury saw a lot of the ball on the right side of the midfield as the Revolution looked to take advantage of the rookie Brandon Vincent, but despite a few dangerous crosses he was unable to add to his two assists this season. Bunbury’s best chance of the night to score came in 20th minute when got on the end of a service from Chris Tierney, but put his shot over the crossbar from the top of the six yard box. Bunbury finished the game with seven fouls, one of which earned him a yellow card, the most of any player on either side.
Injury once again provided an opportunity for Eric Miller to see playing time for the Colorado Rapids when Mekeil Williams was forced to come out at halftime after picking up a knock early in the game. Miller came in at right back with the Rapids up 1-0 on FC Dallas. He did not venture far into the attack and most of his passes were back or towards the middle in order to keep possession. Miller had a relatively quiet night defensively, but in the 81st minute he blocked a shot from Michael Barrios after tracking back half the length of the field. Unfortunately the ball rolled to Victor Ulloa who sent in a powerful shot from distance into the upper 90, beating Tim Howard and earning Dallas a 1-1 draw.
Calum Mallace earned his third start this month in the Montreal Impact’s 5-1 thumping of the Philadelphia Union. Mallace did not see a whole lot of the ball in his 68 minutes and when he did it was a mixed bag. He had an unusually low successful passing percentage, but on the defensive side he earned five recoveries and two clearances. He also found his way into the ref’s notebook for a late sliding tackle in the 50th minute. Mallace made way for the return of Marco Donadel who missed the last six games due to injury. Donadel’s return and the recent acquisition of midfielder Hernan Bernardello once again puts Mallace’s play time in jeopardy despite the Impact also trading away Eric Alexander.
