In this week’s recap of Minnesotans playing professionally: Teal Bunbury scores twice in three days, Eric Miller gets his first assist of the season, and Tyler David appears to have solidified his starting spot.
The New England Revolution started the weekend with a 4-1 loss to Toronto FC that featured a hat-trick by Sebastian Giovinco. Teal Bunbury scored the Revolution’s lone goal in the 88th minute after coming on in the second half. Bunbury was able to get goal side of defender Josh Williams and side-foot a cross past the keeper from the top of the six yard box.
New England rebounded in their midweek Open Cup semifinal against the Chicago Fire. After converting an early PK and trading late first half goals, Bunbury score the final goal of the game to give the Revolution a 3-1 win. Bunbury played the full 90 on the right side and had an active first half that resulted in two chances that ended up on the wrong side of the far post. Bunbury had a much quieter second half, but in the 85th minute he was able to put away this third attempt at the far post.
Eric Miller went the distance at right back for the Colorado Rapids in their 2-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps. Staying in a more attacking position, Miller completed 22 of 27 passes, but the most impressive one came in the build up to the Rapid’s second goal. In the 60th minute, Miller fed a pass through the legs of Marcel De Jong into space for Marlon Hairston who crossed the ball into the box for Dominique Badji to finish. Miller’s pass counted as a “second assist” and gives him his first assist of the season and his second in MLS.
Calum Mallace made a brief appearance in the Montreal Impact’s 1-0 win against the Houston Dynamo. Mallace was subbed on for Marco Donadel for the final 10 minutes of the game.
While Mallace is still struggling to see minutes in Montreal, Tyler David seems to have claimed a starting role with Saint Louis FC by earning his third straight start when they faced Swope Park Rangers. David once again held down the center of the midfield with Chad Bond and earned his first card of the season in the 68th minute after committing a foul to slow up the Swope Park attack.
