A night that will hardly live in many memories: Minnesota’s 0-0 draw with Fort Lauderdale offered a single point and the consolation of seeing both Kevin Venegas and Stefano Pinho return from injury.
In their second game in South Florida in four days, Minnesota United FC continued its streak of earning points on the road for a third straight game. The sparse attendance of less than 500 locals probably should have foreshadowed a difficult night. Minnesota played a conservative, grinding match resulting in a scoreless draw, fitting for a midweek fixture with nighttime water breaks.
Minnesota began with crisp passing leading to some chances early in the opening 15 minutes. But Minnesota’s defensive, patient approach meant the Loons attacked the net mostly from distance. The Strikers’ Bruno was up to the task, deflecting and saving all that came his way.
Minnesota ceded possession in its opponent’s half, choosing instead to rely on teamwork and placement to shut down the Strikers’ attacks. With Ndjock’s four saves, the Minnesota net went undisturbed.
Fort Lauderdale, while showing the same effects from the weather, made an effort to take the game to the Loons, and had some successes. At times, the Strikers were able to get Paulo Júnior past Minnesota’s stalwart Justin Davis and beat the offside trap. And perhaps more importantly, the Strikers were able to take most of their shots at goal from dangerous areas in front of the net.
But all in all, neither team was able to separate themselves in the Florida heat. And returning home to Minnesota with another road point should serve them well in the effort to qualify for the playoffs. The Loons still reside in the last playoff spot, with a six point lead over the next closest team.
Minnesota fielded the same XI that started on Saturday, although Minnesota fans will be heartened that Venegas was able to take to the field and get a solid 30 minutes in. Brovsky has been playing in the right back position to cover for his absence. But one would assume that once the first-choice full back is fit, then the Loons will readjust the lineup again. Stefano Pinho also made a welcome return to the pitch after an injury.
Minnesota will host Rayo OKC in Blaine this Saturday.
