Touchline Minnesota: Friday News in Brief

Kicking off a new feature for the offseason, we’ll be tracking all the news about Minnesota soccer and beyond a couple times a week.

Damion Lowe Back with the Seattle Sounders

According to Lowe’s twitter account, he’s back practicing with the team that loaned him out, the Seattle Sounders, and seems much happier. He is the only player on the Loons to have left Minnesota at this point.

Minnesota United Season Ticket Holders Picking Out Their Seats for the Inaugural MLS Season

It’s a great week in Minnesota soccer fandom as season ticket holders got to pick out their seats this week. Although there have been numerous reports of problems with the payment process, this writer’s twitter has been filled with fans reporting on their seats.

Carl Craig Still Hasn’t Heard About Next Season

Fan favorite but struggling Minnesota United coach Carl Craig reported to Pioneer Press’ Andy Greder that while he would like come back next season, he’s heard nothing from the team yet. The money quotes from Craig:

“I’ll accept whatever happens,” Craig said. “It wasn’t a good season. … To mitigate circumstances, there is often a fall guy, and sometimes it’s the coach.”

    As well as:

“I would like to be here,” Craig said. “I think we can learn from last year.”

For this writer, Carl Craig was put in an impossible situation that was made even harder when most of the team struggled with injuries all season. Only Blake was signed midseason to help the injury-ravaged team. And according to reports, MN likely had the 4th or 5th highest payroll in NASL. Honestly, with the injuries and the move to MLS, it seems like Carl Craig did about as well as he could have considering the circumstances.

Here’s hoping the rift between the two leagues can be healed.

    And in Pointy Ball News…

The Cleveland Browns remain the worst team in American Football. Still, love the attempt at a Tifo!

There is difficult and there is impossible. His situation was definitely difficult but it was empirically not impossible. The tactics and substitutions were often bewildering, and that’s 100% on him. He needed to take a hard line on Laing and instead he kept playing someone who showed open contempt. He could have done much better than he did.

I’m not convinced he could have done much better. He rarely had anything close to his top XI out there due to injuries. And without a XI he could trust, it’s tough to have a good plan for subbing.

He could have done marginally better, sure, but being the coach of a team where only 8 players at most were going to move up meant that he had a much tougher job than most first year head coaches.

Perception right? There seems to be a clean line between those of you who were closer to the players and the coach on an emotional level and and those of us who were watching from more of a distance. He knew when he accepted this position that it was essentially an audition. He knew that players would get injured. He had the best forward in the league and sufficient quality to not be abject, and by the end of the year they were well and truly abject. The fact that no one can make a reasonable case for him to stay on as head coach says a lot.

I will agree, based on the results this year, he did not do well. I still say it was a unintentionally rigged audition. And I don’t think Craig was in a position not to take the job. I just hope he is able to catch on somewhere he is given a fair shake at a head coaching gig.

I seem him as an assistant. It’s not a bad gig.
