Minnesota United Grab Abu Danladi in the MLS SuperDraft

LOS ANGELES — With the first pick of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, Minnesota United FC drafted Abu Danladi, an exciting, young forward who will look to feature in his first season. The Loons took Alec Ferrell and Thomas de Villardi with the 23rd and 42nd pick.

There were signs that the Loons might trade their highly coveted pick. The club are looking to secure another starting striker and it’s unclear how that pursuit will fit into an already stacked front line with Abu Danladi joining Christian Ramirez and Femi Hollinger-Janzen.

Indeed, in the 12 hours leading up to the draft, the United technical staff fielded seven to eight phone calls from clubs looking to trade for their top pick.

In the end, Minnesota opted to pick up a player they believe can have an instant impact. Finding starting talent was an important factor for head coach Adrian Heath.

While Jeremy Ebobisse looked to be the favorite for the top pick, Minnesota opted for Danladi’s somewhat more raw athletic talent. Danladi comes to United as a Generation adidas pick, having played three seasons at UCLA. There, he scored 18 goals in 42 matches.

In his speech, the Ghanaian Danladi said that he felt “blessed” that Minnesota put faith in him for the pick.

Minnesota had the 23rd and 43rd picks of the draft and chose Alec Ferrell and Thomas de Villardi.

Alec Ferrell is the first goalkeeper on the roster (if we exclude the brief stint of Jeff Attinella before he was traded away). The Wake Forest grad was a NSCAA First Team All-American in 2016. Ferrell did not play in the MLS combine, but after the draft as-yet-not-announced goalkeeping coach, Marius Rovde, said he was excited about the young keeper. Rovde believes Ferrell was the best keeper available this year, but was overlooked because he was injured and had to miss the final for Wake Forest.

The Loons took the 25th pick from the Chicago Fire who traded it for the top spot in the allocation order, which allowed the Fire to sign Juninho. They traded it to Philadelphia in exchange for $50k in 2018 General Allocation Money and the 42nd overall pick.

With the 42nd pick, Minnesota took defender Thomas de Villardi from the University of Delaware. The Frenchman is something of an unknown, having not even been invited to the MLS combine.

This story will be updated throughout the day.

      So, two questions.
      1. Could this possibly be the “striker in the pipeline” Heath was referring to? Seems like overkill to go after someone at this point with the attackers we already have.
      2. Could Ebobisse not showing up on time and not playing the first two games at the combine have hurt his stock? I thought it was reported that him coming late was a sign he had an agreement in place at the draft already. Could there have been a different reason?

No. It looked like MN had a trade set up until shortly before the draft. Evidently that fell through.

Ugh, drafts are weird. Hopefully Danladi can stay healthy then.

What has been Danladi’s injury history? Seem to be a big concern of people before the draft but it’s difficult to find specifics and the extent of the injuries.

Also curious. I haven’t seen anything about exactly what kind of injuries, and if the same thing repeatedly, etc.

I like the sound of “high upside.” I like his positional flexibility. This is a good pick, for as long as I’ve been reading draft previews, Danladi has been mentioned as the obvious #1 or one of the top, top, choices.

I’ve officially come around on Danladi. Im excited. Word is he has higher upside, and coaching up strikers is Inchy’s specialty so… I buy that injuries will be less of an issue with games spread out more, and he won’t be a focal point right off the bat.

The versatility is great, especially short term for minutes and depth, but I’m glad it wasn’t the only rationale. I’m still high on Ebo and think he has a bright future, I hope we’re not kicking ourselves in a few years.

Now let’s see what’s coming next week!

Danladi tried to explain the injury history by explaining how jam-packed the college season is, citing the quick turnaround between matches. I buy it. Regardless, I think this was 100% the correct pick for the franchise. For a new expansion franchise, absolute no brainer to take the most talented player in the draft with the most upside.

Given his ability to play the wing, salivating at the thought of Ramirez up top, Venegas sitting behind him with Ibarra and Danladi flanking him.

        Ramirez
        Ibarra Vengas Danladi
        Schuller Saeid
        Venegas Calvo Demidov Davis
        Traffic Cone

Assuming Danladi earns the job Day 1 over Femi.

Although it’s been painfully slow, I like how this team is slowly piecing together.

There’s a reason we sing “Justin Davis down the left hand side”

That’s a respectable lineup already (I think). And Heath did say 1-2 signings were coming before emphasizing the 1 very important piece. We could still see a few spots upgraded, which of course also improves our depth.

We’re paying Ramirez starting money, but he might well be a spark plug along with Femi if that piece is indeed a striker. What was the basis for thinking it was a striker? I didn’t listen to the interview but the quote I saw didn’t mention position.

Seems like Abu, Saeid, and the fullbacks are all candidates to back up more established players. I suppose Ramirez would be next on that list, so maybe getting a striker isn’t that crazy-especially if it’s really a difference maker.

A clarifying question: if most of the players drafted after the second round would be best classified as long term projects or prospects, what will they do this season since we don’t have a USL team? (Loans? Long-term training plans? A zen hermitage?)

Loans are the best bet, Ben. I’m guessing Ferrell will be retained by the club as the third goalkeeper. As far as de Villardi or other players who don’t seem to fit on the field this year, sending them to NASL or USL sides (Minnesota has a lot of those relationships now) would make sense.

What about the three designated player spots available? Any talk on who we will target?

As we’ve been saying all along, MN will not be a team pursuing a lot of DPs if any. It’s not in their budget. This will be a team that resembles markets like Columbus or KC.

Columbus had 1 DP last year (2 before they traded Kei) and SKC had all 3. DC was only team not to have a DP last year.

There are big-name expensive DPs and there are SKC-type lower-budget DPs, but either way all teams are using them. We should too even if it isn’t at $3mil/yr type player.

Heath told Taylor Twellman that he sees Danladi not as a winger, but playing centrally as a number 9. Wondering what the competition will be between Danladi and Ramirez for that striker role.

That is especially odd when you factor in rumors of an even bigger ticket striker incoming. But if Heath wanted Danladi the most, I trust him regardless of short term fit. Although I do wonder what the approach will be.

Heath’s comments on Danladi’s attitude and wanting to be here were telling, too. I wonder if Ebo didn’t stand out as much attitude-wise, but that would surprise me from my own impression of him. That first match in Portland just gained another storyline today as I’m sure people will be comparing the two as they develop.

I love burners and am looking forward to the potential of Danladi starting on the opposite flank from Ibarra.

My only question is if there were looking to trade #1 pick and pick up Chicago’s 3rd pick instead. They probably still get their man–since most people had him rated 3rd–and pick up other stuff too. Tough to know how it all was going down, but that would have been super draft mastery. I hope he does great. Certainly a pick that could play a really big role in the future!
