Minnesota United Preseason Camp Fills Out With Signings and Trialists

As Minnesota United began preseason on Monday, there was a mix of new faces and old. The club started with 16 players officially announced, but reached 22 by the end of Tuesday in addition to a large group of trialists.

Most notably, the Loons completed the signing of Finnish midfielder, Rasmus Schüller from Swedish side BK Häcken. Previous reporting from Jeffrey Carlisle said that the transaction would likely be a TAM-level signing with a transfer fee in the neighborhood of $750,000. A spokesperson for Minnesota United confirmed, however, that no TAM was used in this signing. Update: Minnesota United has corrected this statement and now they say that TAM was used in this transaction.

Check out our previous reporting on Schüller’s scouting report.

With Schüller’s work permit secured, he will now join up with his new teammates in Arizona.

On Tuesday, the Loons also announced two additional signings: Bernardo Añor and Jermaine Taylor. Añor returns to United after having spent last season on loan with Minnesota. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old midfielder saw his playing time significantly hampered by an ankle injury, seeing fewer than 450 minutes for the Loons.

Jermaine Taylor comes to Minnesota from the Portland Timbers, where he was a regular center back for the club. Taylor joins a very deep center back pool for the Loons with Francisco Calvo, Joe Greenspan, Vadim Demidov, and Brent Kallman at the position. However, Taylor can also play right back, a position where Minnesota previous had one natural option in Kevin Venegas.

On Monday, Minnesota United announced the return of two Loons: center back Brent Kallman and midfielder Ibson.

    Trialists

A large group of trialists has also joined the club in preseason, including some familiar faces such as Tiago Calvano, Sammy Ndjock, Lance Laing, and Ismaila Jome. Calvano and Ndjock would be surprise signings since the club appears to be at its cap for international players. However, Jome is expected to sign for the club very soon.

The other trialists are: Charlie Lyon, Marco Carducci, Andrew Tinari, Raul Gonzalez, Duke LaCroix, Eugene Starikov, and David Goldsmith.

Most notably from this group are Marco Carducci and Eugene Starikov. Carducci was previously considered a goal keeping prospect for the Vancouver Whitecaps and previously played under Minnesota United’s new goalkeeping coach Marius Rovde, but was recently let go by the Cascadia club. Starikov is a Ukranian American who was on Zenit St. Petersburg’s books for years, though he spent that entire time out on loan.

Will be interesting to see how the trialists pan out. If we can add a couple of under-the-radar guys, that would be great.

At this point everyone is off the radar because the good players we would need are already gone on other rosters. This will be a tall task in year one for the Loons.

As a Timbers fan who has watched every Timbers game (with or without Taylor), I don’t have much praise for him. He was pretty horrible when he played. Decent in the air but an absolute stick in the mud when it comes to defending. Hope he pans out for you guys but he was pretty horrendous for us.

Welp. I really liked the idea of having an MLS veteran who could start as needed and show well. Hopefully Greenspan and/or Kallman adapt quickly.

Maybe Taylor has a Renaissance suiting up for an expansion side? Heath always emphasizes that he’s asking potential signees if they really want to be here. But Taylor had a pretty short stop at Portland too, no? He might really be on the decline.

Worst case scenario, we picked up a defender who’s familiar with MLS opponents and gameplay and can pass a tip or two on to the rest.

Yeah he wasn’t here long, about a year but started on a very limited basis. Was always a bandaid after Borchers got hurt. You never know though! Could play lights out for you guys. We’ll see how he fares vs. Adi on 6/21!

Yeah it adds intrigue for that season opener on top of the Danladi-Ebobisse comp

That too! Was specifically referring to the game I’ll be at. =)

Yeah, i don’t think he’ll be at MN long, and do think he’s on a decline and didn’t play well for PDX last year as well (nor his last year in Houston). However, he is versatile and can play many positions from CDM, CB, to OBs – so that serviceable depth at multiple places could be important. He is also a seasoned pro, Jamaican International, and MLS veteran, so his presence will be good to help a young team or a team adjusting to the intricacies of a MLS season.

      Interesting notes on the trialists…thanks!

Ismaila Jome – completely expected this. Young, domestic, and could be sent out on loan if MN feels he still needs a chance but more time to develop. don’t know if he is / will be MLS quality or not, but low risk and no roster resources needed.

Marco Carducci – interesting!; remember him being touted with Vancouver – i believe Canadian homegrowns now count as domestics on teams in the US or Canada now, so if that is the case, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make the roster at all. he is a Canadian Youth international.

Eugene Starikov – recognized this name but couldn’t place it. maybe from Yanks Abroad or discussion about Bradenton / US youth teams. Interesting, and I wonder his quality and how/why he ended up as a trialist at MN – any connections?

Sammy Ndjock – can only hope he had started the process for a green card. But he wouldn’t be the worst option at GK (he is a Cameroon INTL after all), a fan favorite, and available.
Lance Laing – disappointing season last year, but overall i think he is quality. I can’t tell if I’m surprised or not that he’s on trial / still being considered….lol.
Tiago Calvano – surprised he’s trialing, considering his age. I thought he might be riding off into the sunset.
Andrew Tinari – he at least got an announcement, so curious if MN is really high on him

Others: Raul Gonzalez – what raul gonzalez is this? 😉 lol. what position? where is he from? I just looked up the other 3 guys (college kids & reserve GK)….you never know with diamonds in the rough.
