The NWSL will more than double its minimum salary
The Houston Chronicle reported that the National Women’s Soccer League will increase its league minimum salary from $7,200 to about $15,000. This increase is both great news for the women currently in the league and a terrible reminder of where we are in regards to women’s professional sports in this country.
Hopefully, this is a sign of continued growth and improvement for the league as it tries to break out as a top sporting and entertainment draw. I can’t help but think of the struggle of these women who have been willing to do the work for so little, and for so long, just to play a game they love.
These women have been willing to help build a successful league while receiving little in return will be forgotten, with the only sign they played at all a couple of game-worn jerseys, their unlinked name on some club’s Wikipedia page, and a bad credit report.
While we might sing the praises of the national team players in the league, without those players earning the league minimum, the NWSL wouldn’t exist. Here’s to another doubling next year and the year after that until they all get paid what they are truly worth.
John Alvbåge officially joins Minnesota United FC on a half-season loan
New goalkeeper John Alvbåge was brought to Minnesota on a half-season loan deal, with an option to extend the loan for an additional year and half.
The move provides flexibility and allows Minnesota to easily part ways with the 34-year-old ‘keeper in the event that the team needs to free an international spot, or Alvbåge doesn’t perform well in goal. It marks another smart move by a club looking to build a side that can compete in its expansion season in MLS.
