News in Brief: NWSL Doubles Minimum Salary, Alvbåge’s Loan Deal, and More

The NWSL will more than double its minimum salary

The Houston Chronicle reported that the National Women’s Soccer League will increase its league minimum salary from $7,200 to about $15,000. This increase is both great news for the women currently in the league and a terrible reminder of where we are in regards to women’s professional sports in this country.

Hopefully, this is a sign of continued growth and improvement for the league as it tries to break out as a top sporting and entertainment draw. I can’t help but think of the struggle of these women who have been willing to do the work for so little, and for so long, just to play a game they love.

These women have been willing to help build a successful league while receiving little in return will be forgotten, with the only sign they played at all a couple of game-worn jerseys, their unlinked name on some club’s Wikipedia page, and a bad credit report.

While we might sing the praises of the national team players in the league, without those players earning the league minimum, the NWSL wouldn’t exist. Here’s to another doubling next year and the year after that until they all get paid what they are truly worth.

John Alvbåge officially joins Minnesota United FC on a half-season loan

New goalkeeper John Alvbåge was brought to Minnesota on a half-season loan deal, with an option to extend the loan for an additional year and half.

The move provides flexibility and allows Minnesota to easily part ways with the 34-year-old ‘keeper in the event that the team needs to free an international spot, or Alvbåge doesn’t perform well in goal. It marks another smart move by a club looking to build a side that can compete in its expansion season in MLS.

    News bits

    • The Jorge Villafana to Minnesota #roomer turned out to be false.
    • Ben Speas had some nice things to say about his new team in a chat he had with Indy Eleven’s website.
    • Looks like Landon Donovan won’t be coming back this season with Real Salt Lake.
    • Brad Guzan will join the Atlanta Mini-Falcons after finishing Middlesborough’s EPL season in May.
    • The Minneapolis Citizens, a supporters group for Minneapolis City SC, has announced the formation of their charitable arm to be run by Edu Rosales, appropriately named the “Model Citizens.” Clever.
    • Former Loon J.C. Banks has signed with league-owned Jacksonville Armada. Banks never really found consistent playing time with Minnesota in the two seasons he spent with MNUFC, and was used primarily as a late-game substitute.

Huge sigh of relief that the goalie situation is sorted out for the near future. Good stuff, William.

Yeah, I think this is a great move by the club. Don’t overspend (*cough* Atlanta *cough*) and leave themselves with flexibility if something else comes up.

Oh cool, Villafana–oh. Well at some point that allocation ranking is going to come in handy. We’re officially first now that Guzan is going to ATL, right? One fine day that’ll be a nice thing to have.

Best of Luck to JC Banks, loved the energy he always brought. May not be the most talented but definitely had moments and was guaranteed not to play halfheartedly.

JC rocked… you are correct. He was always full-in when on the field.
