In this week’s recap of Minnesotans playing professionally outside of the state: Mallace and David earn starts, ejections doom New England and Colorado, and Yueill takes on a new role.
In a “replay” of the 2016 NWSL final, the Washington Spirit were once again on the losing side. Kassey Kallman earned her first start of the season for her new team and added 90 minutes to her record of consecutive minutes played in the league. The North Carolina Courage (formerly Western New York Flash) scored the lone goal of the game with cross to an unmarked player in the box..
With Marco Donadel serving a red card suspension, Calum Mallace got his second start of the season. The midfielder played 62 minutes for the Montreal Impact in a 2-1 win over Atlanta United.
Cody Cropper and the New England Revolution suffered a 3-0 loss to the Chicago Fire. A week after earning his first shutout of the season the Rev’s keeper failed to make a save in a 3-0 loss to the Chicago Fire. The odds were against him after ejection of defender Je-Vaughn Watson in the 27th minute and the rest of the defense didn’t give much help when it counted.
Early in the second half the Revolution began to switch out attackers in an effort to prepare for a midweek game. Teal Bunbury entered in the 66th minute. While he did not register a shot, he did end without missing a pass and three recoveries.
The defensive struggles continued for the Colorado Rapids. The Rapids established a fortress at home last season, but have been unable to quite replicate that in 2017. Colorado held onto a one-goal lead over Real Salt Lake for 85 minutes until Jared Watts was shown a red. Salt Lake converted the resulting PK and added a second goal three minutes later. Eric Miller went the full 90 at right back and to his credit racked up a fair number of defensive stats.
Jackson Yueill played another full 90 for Reno 1868 FC in a 4-0 loss to San Antonio FC. The midfielder had a good opportunity to get his team on the board in the second half. He settled a ball in the box and sent a shot far post, but the keeper pushed the ball over the crossbar. Yueill also stepped up for the first time to take corner kicks, but was unable to create any dangerous chances.
Saint Louis FC split results in two games this past week with Tyler David earning starts in both. David went the distance in a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. The midfielder put in a solid performance controlling the center of the field. David only played 55 minutes in the second game which was a 4-0 loss to FC Cincinnati.
Cat Parkhill was on the bench for FC Kansas City’s 2-0 win over the Boston Breakers.
Mukwelle Akale’s Villarreal CF C lost to Novelda CF 3-0. Villarreal has now dropped out of a promotion playoff spot.
