Loons in the Gold Cup
Fransisco Calvo played all 90 minutes in a 1-0 Costa Rica win over Honduras. During the first half, Johan Venegas had to be stretchered off the pitch. There has been no update on his condition, but he is expected to miss Costa Rica’s next match against Canada. Jermaine Taylor lined up at right back in a 2-0 win over Curacao. Jamaica was saved by a spectacular performance in goal from Philadelphia’s Andre Blake.
Other Gold Cup notes
Elsewhere in the Gold Cup, Canada defeated French Guiana thanks to Whitecaps youngster Alphonso Davies. Davies became the first player born in the 2000s to score at a top-level international tournament. Mexico surprised no one as they dismantled El Salvador 3-1 — despite manager Juan Osorio being banned for the entire tournament. Martinique surprised viewers, but not some Sports Illustrated pundits, with a 2-0 win over Nicaragua.
