Rochester’s two men’s soccer clubs faced off against each other in the inaugural Rochester City Cup with Med City FC beating Rochester Football Club (RFC) 3-1 on Friday night.
The first half was marked with high-flying tackles evident of a cup final.
Rochester Football Club was making hard tackles, and Med City was jarred and perhaps a bit lackadaisical.
RFC took a goal from a breakaway on the right side, slightly against the run-of-play in the first half. A Med City penalty tied it up, though there was questions of whether the player went down too easily.
The second half was less fruitful for RFC as they went a man down in the 70th minute. The Medics found two goals to take home the cup and bragging rights. The winning goal was a beautiful strike from Jordan Lennon. The Medic one-touched the ball with the side of his foot, watching it curl around the goalkeeper and just inside the far post. Cue rapturous celebrations.
It was a proper cup match for two sides that already have a bit of a rivalry. The Medics experience saw them manage the game much better and find a winner and a cushion late on.
The biggest point to take away is that Rochester has three amateur sides (including Rochester United FC) filled with quality players delivering exciting soccer this summer.
