    Northern Pitch Is Now FiftyFive.One

    Welcome to  FiftyFive.One – (pronounced Fifty-Five-One)

When Northern Pitch started, it pulled together a group of avid soccer fans and writers who had previously all worked separately. Some of us had our own blogs, podcasts, fanzines, or scribbles on napkins. We came together and teamed up with another group of sports websites, MinnCentric.

In little over a year, we like to think we have accomplished a lot. We have become the singular source for regular coverage of professional soccer in Minnesota. We have broken news and we have told stories that weren’t being told elsewhere.

As we have grown, both in scope and size, we came to the point where we needed to branch off on our own and do something new. We are grateful for the support from everyone involved with MinnCentric.

FiftyFive. One is a partnership with Brave New Media–a premier media company from Minneapolis with deep ties to the soccer community–as well as Byline Press–creators of the gameday zine The Darkness and the annual book The Complete Darkness. We are also bringing in new writers as well as the sarcastic and witty Two United Fans Podcast.

Our name comes from the average high temperature of Minnesota. It’s a way for us to signal an intent to take the temperature of soccer in the region, to be at its heartbeat.

Soccer is poised for a remarkable growth in the coming years, both in our region and the country, and FiftyFive. One will be the first stop for regional fans of the game as well as those outside our region who are looking for the Northern perspective on the game. These are heady times for soccer and we want to continue to explore the stories happening all around us.

So is it pronounced FiftyFiveOne, or FiftyFivePointOne?

I think 551 is going to take a while for me to come around to as a name. Northern Pitch was a good name, and I’m sad you guys aren’t keeping it.

We will probably be saying this a lot of times over the next couple of months, but it was not in our control. We would have liked to keep it as well.
With that said, we are excited about our new name and how it represents us differently than before.

Yeah, I figured as much, but thanks for confirming. Good luck with the new site. It has a very clean look. Not sure what I think about all the white space though. I expect the writing will continue to be great.

Also, will the name change periodically to keep up with global warming?

      5-5-1 sounds like a fun keeper-less formation

When down a goal, late. Though I’d prefer three up front at that point.

In number form, is it 55.1? or 551? I mean… branding… you know?

A person checking on traffic might get confused with 551 vs 511. Going to the site by mistake might draw in a few new people though. Then there are the seniors too Over 55. Can you tell I liked the old name too?

World cup qualifier updates are in the news section. These comment threads under the articles replace the forums.

I went through all 19 pages of news and can’t find the world cup thread from the old forum. I was ready to post my next 8 teams being eliminated. there were some great topics in those forums. what is the timeline for getting them transferred? is it even possible to even start a new topic here?

I assumed you were referencing Ben Mackenzie’s regular column, the first of which has been posted.

To answer your question, no. We have moved away from forums to the current format. But please feel free to interact with us here, on Twitter, on Reddit, etc.

I appreciate the reply… I had a good string of WC qualifying highlights from unsung corners of the globe on that thread… and now no way to transfer or even start a continuation on this site…. yet many stories were transferred… There are enthusiastic soccer folk on the list of authorized contributors on NP2; but will miss the community spirit of NP1 where other enthusiastic fans could initiate and share. … even if only Jon Marthaler and a few others read them. Jon, thanks for interacting on NP1 under the WC thread!

55.1? if you can’t use Northern Pitch, how about a name that connects to Soccer in Minnesota? Occasionally on NP, I would pop over to read some Twins or Wild news…. I’m sure there were some casual readers (other Minnesota sports fans) who also clicked over to see some Minny soccer news for the first time.
