News in Brief: NASL Denied Division II Status, World Cup Qualifiers, and More

NASL denied Division II status for 2018

The North American Soccer League (NASL) applied for and was denied Division II status for 2018 by the US Soccer Federation yesterday. Tough times continue for the league that saw Minnesota United FC leave for MLS, teams fold in Oklahoma City and Fort Lauderdale, and clubs in Tampa Bay and Ottawa jump to the USL. This leaves the future state of the league uncertain, even with two new franchises announced to join the NASL next year in San Diego and Orange County, Calif.

    CONCACAF World Cup qualifying roundup

World Cup Qualifying continued Tuesday night in the Hexagonal, the final round of qualifiers for CONCACAF. Two more matchdays remain in October.

    • The USMNT earned a 1-1 draw on the road in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
    • Costa Rica drew 1-1 at home in San Jose against Mexico.
    • Panama won big at home 3-0 against Trinidad and Tobago.

Mexico and Costa Rica see themselves comfortably within the top three guaranteed qualifying spots. Panama leapfrogged USA and Honduras with its recent win into third place.
