Minnesota United have reached an agreement with Ecuadorian club Universidad Católica to sign 23-year-old midfielder Romario Ibarra.
Minnesota United has bolstered its attack and invested in its future with the announcement that it has reached an agreement on the transfer of Ecuadorian midfielder Romario Ibarra. The 23-year-old winger was signed from Club Deportivo Universidad Católica in his native Ecuador using Targeted Allocation Money. The signing is dependent upon Ibarra’s receipt of his visa, and he will occupy an international roster spot once the signing is complete.
Ibarra made his professional debut with Universidad Católica in 2011 and has been with the Ecuadorian club ever since, apart from a one-year loan spell to fellow Ecuadorian club LDU Quito in 2013. Ibarra scored a total of 16 goals in 131 matches with Católica, including, in the current domestic season, 1 goal in 13 appearances. Ibarra is a pacey winger who uses his speed to good effect in challenging defenders.
At the international level, Ibarra has made two appearances for the Ecuadorian national team, both last October in qualifying matches for the 2018 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Ibarra scored the lone Ecuadorian goal in each of those contests, against Chile and Argentina. His pace, combination play, and finishing ability were all on display in his second international goal scored against Argentina last October:
