Soccer brewery coming to Minneapolis

Months ago, it was announced that Minneapolis would be getting its first “Latino Brewery” (the words of Citypages). On Friday, Citypages followed up that announcement with the news that in addition to a brewery and patio, there would be a 1,500-square-foot soccer pitch. Doña Cervicería will also have a soccer league that plays on the field, for which registration is already open.

Travel hinders Open Cup for amateur teams

Lower-league difficulties in the U.S. Open Cup are familiar for Minnesotans after Minneapolis City SC was disqualified two years ago. This year another obstacle is added. Teams will now, in addition to the $200 entrance fee, be required to pay a $1,000 bond. The bond is returned if the team plays, but if at any time the team forfeits a game, the bond is lost.

Why would a team forfeit? Usually travel cost is the issue. As a team wins and is made to travel further, they cannot afford the cost and forfeit the match. John Paul Motta, the president of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association, explains the conundrum.
