News in Brief: Minnesota United win, Matt Doyle Returns, and More…

    Minnesota United Win Opener

Minnesota United FC played its first match of the season away to the Vancouver Whitecaps and defeated the Canadians 3-2. Francisco Calvo, Darwin Quintero, and Romario Ibarra were the goalscorers, with Quintero setting up Calvo and Ibarra while netting a penalty kick himself.

New signing Vito Mannone earned the win on his birthday despite allowing two goals, though he was not primarily to blame for either. Poor marking on the first goal and no marking on the second allowed Vancouver free looks at goal. Mannone expressed delight at fellow freshman Romain Metanire’s performance.

Captain Calvo said after the match that he will continue to play left back, though it is not his preferred position.

    Week One in the Books

MLS is back, and with it comes Matthew Doyle’s weekly recap and observations from the weekend. Doyle looks at the league as a whole, and highlights 10 points of interest after looking at the playoff projections (yes, playoff projections in week one. Doyle is nothing if not confident).
