Minnesota United FC get first win in Allianz

In its third game in the new stadium, Minnesota United FC got its first win in Allianz this weekend, topping D.C. United 1-0. A late goal for the Loons sealed the victory, including some nervy defending, but supporters got to sing Wonderwall for the first time in Cloud City.

The match was United’s second consecutive clean sheet after a disaster against Toronto FC on April 19. It was the second consecutive match without Michael Boxall nor Francisco Calvo in defense. Boxall’s horrorshow performance against Toronto explains his absence, and the clean sheet against LA on Wednesday was head coach Adrian Heath’s explanation for Calvo’s healthy scratch.

Heath was critical of Darwin Quintero, saying the Designated Player was “still not what we need,” after Quintero was subbed off and appeared to have been injured. Miguel Ibarra, on the other hand, made a clear impact with his entrance to the match, bringing the energy and work rate he is known for.

Next up, th eLoons take the Seattle Sounders, who will be without Christian Roldan after the attacker was sent off on Sunday.
