Calum Mallace moves on from last week’s blunder, Kassey Kallman starts (see bottom of the post for a photo gallery), Tyler David returns for a short cameo, and Teal Bunbury is still searching to replicate his Open Cup performance.
Calum Mallace was not given an immediate chance to make up for his conceded penalty last weekend against RSL. Instead he only saw two minutes of play as a sub in the Montreal Impact’s 0-0 draw with the Portland Timbers.
He did return to the starting lineup during the Impact’s weekend matchup with New York City FC. While his side did end up losing 3-1, Mallace was not directly involved in any of NYCFC’s goals. Paired with Eric Alexander in the center of a four-man midfield, Mallace put in a decent 79 minutes of play and finished with six recoveries, two interceptions, and one tackle while keeping his usual high-percentage passing. Mallace is a consistent player for Montreal, but he seldom dominates on either side of the ball and this has often lead him to be more of a rotation player than a consistent starter.
It was a relatively quiet night for Teal Bunbury when the New England Revolution and Real Salt Lake played to a scoreless tie. He has yet to replicate his strong Open Cup performance in the league, but continues to put in work on both sides of the ball. Bunbury was given another start and before being subbed off in the 83rd minute he had created two chances to build on his assist from last week, but the ball never found the back of the net. On the defensive side he finished with three recoveries, two interceptions, and one clearance and tackle.
Kassey Kallman once again anchored the Boston Breaker’s backline as they saw another early lead slip away into another loss this past weekend. The Breakers scored in the third minute against Sky Blue FC, but a PK and some poor marking in the box gave Sky Blue a 3-1 lead by the 74th minute. Boston was able to pull one back before the final whistle and in the process score twice in one game for the first time this season. While this is an improvement it still doesn’t change that Boston is on route finish the season with the worse defense and record in league history. Tyler David made a short return to the field for Saint Louis FC in a 2-0 loss to the Tulsa Roughnecks. David was subbed on for the final eight minutes of the game.
Eric Miller missed the Colorado Rapids 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City due to a red card suspension.
Cat Parkhill was an unused substitute for FC Kansas City in a 3-2 loss to Seattle Reign.
