Minnesota United’s Sammy Ndjock Bounces Back from Own Goal with Humor

When life gives you lemons (or cherries), make lemonade (or cherry jelly sandwiches). United’s goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock is likely still smarting from the own goal heard round the world. But less than 24 hours later, he was making a 30-second video making fun of the situation.

During an international friendly with AFC Bournemouth, Minnesota United’s Sammy Ndjock threw the ball into his own net. Just threw it in. It was likely a combination of seeing Jordan Ibe advancing and the ball sticking to his gloves on a hot, humid evening, but it led to what some British websites are calling the worst own goal ever. Ouch.

Sammy Ndjock might be excused if he wanted to bury his head in the sand for a day or week or century. Yet the next day, the club released a short, humorous video blaming the error on Sammy eating jelly sandwiches. Watch for yourself.

The Loons lost a friendly 4-0 to an EPL side, which won’t worry too many fans. But now the team turns back to the league where they will host the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Sammy’s error (and his history of intermittent howlers) will certainly bring up the question of whether his deputy, Steward Ceus, will be ready to start. Ceus, of course, is not without his own howlered past. But for now, it is good to see Ndjock being able to at least partially laugh at the situation.

I love the video and that’s a smart move by the United brass. I will admit, however, that the air got sucked out of the stadium when that own goal occurred. It seemed that everything after that was running at second speed. My wife think’s it was the overbearing heat on fitness, but I can’t past the rapidly shifting vibe after the gaffe.

I still love Sammy. It’s good this happened during a friendly so that he’d remember this during league games.

As a former keeper, I have to say Great Play Sammy! I am talking about the Jelly Sandwich of course.

My gloves used to get sticky on hot and humid days also. His own goal is in the news all over the world: Australia, India, South Africa, Britain and of course Cameroon. Give Sammy a break, he’s a very talented keeper. It’s good to see that he can laugh it off. #blameitonthejelly
