Minneapolis City Receive Berth in US Open Cup

With the first season in its history under its belt, Minneapolis City will look to the US Open Cup this fall. The US Soccer Federation announced the October matchups for the first two qualifying rounds of the 2017 tournament.

Minneapolis City, who play in the Premier League of America (PLA) will join the competition in the second round of qualifying. The club’s chair, Dan Hoedeman, joked that this means “We will always be able to say how in our first season we advanced past the first round (no matter what happens).”

The Crows will either face Ann Arbor FC (PDL) or Oakland County FC (PLA). Because Oakland County plays in the eastern conference of the PLA, the two clubs did not face one another this season.

After the USSF announced the October 22 fixture, Hoedeman was ecstatic: “We could not be more excited. It’s the second oldest knockout cup competition in the world and to see our name on the board gave me chills. It’s early rounds, but it’s still Mpls City in the the USOC.”

The match will be played at the National Sports Center’s U2 field on October 22 at 2:30 p.m. (CT).

Who’s going to play that game? At least five of the players shown above will be away at college.

City talked about this some in their most recent podcast. I am interviewing Jon Bisswurm, who will be managing their cup side, in the imminent future as well, should have that up next week.

U2 field? Why not in the Stadium? Seems kind of weird to me… I guess we’ll all just sit on the hill…
