  • Lagos Confirms MLS Expansion Draft for 2017

As Minnesota United gradually begins to look to its 2017 entrance into MLS, Sporting Director Manny Lagos will be using a variety of tools to put together his MLS squad. Buried amongst the pageantry and celebration of the MLS announcement this week was an interesting bit of news: MLS will have an expansion draft this fall for Minnesota United and Atlanta United.

Throughout the year, there have been rumors that the expansion draft would be replaced by new league mechanisms. Previously, FiftyFive. One reported that the Loons would be able to bring players to the league from their existing squad.

Writing for MLSsoccer.com, our own Jeff Rueter confirmed that there would be an expansion draft for the two expansion sides in 2017. Owner Dr. Bill McGuire had hinted at the possibility of an expansion draft in his interview with Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press earlier in the week.

The last expansion draft for MLS was in 2014, when NYCFC and Orlando City FC joined the league. In the expansion draft, every club protects 11 players and its Generation Adidas players. The expansion sides were each allowed to take one unprotected player from each team. The most notable pick-ups from the 2014 draft were Tommy McNamara, Donovan Ricketts, and Ned Grabavoy. Here is a short primer on the expansion draft.

We will certainly be hearing much more about 2017 in the coming weeks and months, but for now Loons fans can speculate on which players they’d like to poach from the existing MLS squads.

Can’t say that I’m a huge fan of the expansion draft, it sucks for teams to lose players (this will happen to us soon) and it’s no fun just stocking up on the same old same old MLS veterans. Still, like Tommy McNamara, there’s occasionally good stuff to be found.

Any players that we’re hoping are available? My dream guy is Oalex Anderson, the Seattle Sounders forward. He’s got so much flash, one of the most exciting players in the league. May not be available though. Vancouver will have to leave unprotected some good players. Christian Dean could still be a good centerback. Paolo Tornaghi could be a starter or back-up for us in goal. Deybi Flores had a lot of hype but seems to have dropped off.

There seem to be two approaches to the expansion draft: getting veterans and taking flyers on unrealized talent. I much prefer the second option.

This is going to be one of the most fun parts of the next few months. Nothing like speculation over rosters!
I saw the /r/mls comments on this issue and it was interesting to see what players fans would protect. Someone left Borchers unprotected. Hello, nurse!

Noticed that as well! Another interesting piece I read on that /r/mls thread was about Brad Evans potentially being a free agent for the expansion draft. Any idea on how that affects protecting him and expansion teams ability to select a free agent?

If he is a free agent at the time of the draft I would think he couldn’t be selected because he isn’t on a team’s roster.

Would be stunned if Borchers didn’t retire this offseason. He’s 35 and just suffered a devastating injury. I kinda hope he goes into coaching.

It’s hard to imagine that we wouldn’t get our starting goalkeeper out of the expansion draft this year.

Especially if someone like MacMath remains out of favor and is unprotected come draft time. I’ll miss Sammy though…

We could end up with Knighton or Shuttleworth depending on who comes out on top after this season.

Agreed, Dan and Kyle. New England and Colorado seem likely, but there’s a couple other teams I’m looking at along with them. Columbus brought in U-21 int’l Zack Steffen this year, making starter Steve Clark on the hotseat. Similar situation with Clint Irwin in Toronto, who’s been injured with young backup Zach Bono playing well. Any of these options (including ZM, BK, or BS) would be a solid MLS starter.

I’m desperately hoping that we do not. I don’t see an option that’s good enough. Unless we’re resigned to settling for someone like Worra.

We haven’t even mentioned Jeff Attinella yet. If not from the expansion draft, who are you targeting as a GK?

I’d just like to let Manny know I’m available, but I don’t work cheap.
