  • Open the Rumor Floodgates: Schweinsteiger Linked to Minnesota United

The confetti from Minnesota United’s MLS party has hardly been swept up, yet rumors of who will be their first Designated Player have begun. Univision reports that the Loons have joined Atlanta United and Chicago Fire in the pursuit to sign German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The 32 year-old midfielder recently announced that he would be leaving Manchester United and would not be signing for another European club. That he would land at one of the MLS expansion clubs for 2017 is completely reasonable, but Minnesota seems very unlikely to come to fruition.

Minnesota United issued a standard “no comment,” when asked about their pursuit of the German. More importantly, Manny Lagos and Bill McGuire have repeatedly indicated an aversion to big name (and big money) stars as designated players. (Though, the club had an agreement that fell through two seasons ago to bring Icelandic legend Eidur Gudjohnsen to the club). Instead, the team will likely be looking to developing stars from Latin and South America for designated players such as Portland Timbers’ Diego Valeri.

Schweinsteiger looks like a very improbable signing for the Loons, but the rumor offers fans a glimpse at the oncoming deluge of rampant speculation and rumors. Welcome to MLS, Minnesota.

Why is no one talking about the Messi to Minnesota rumor that I just started?

I’m torn, I know it would be bad business both on and off the field, but part of me would love to have a man whose last name means “Pig Sticker” in a town formerly called “Pig’s Eye”. I mean…the chants, sings and fan experience would be worth it…for about one game.

Pig mounter, actually, but same difference.

Either way, it brings a whole new lens to the hunting scenes in Lord of the Flies (blood lust, sexual awakening, or pre-emptive metaphor for the DP rule?)

I am reserving judgement with this club until we historically see what they have in their plans. They haven’t signed one MLS player yet so until we start seeing signing it’s best to have a wait and see approach. They may decide to go the developing route and then they find out 30k to 40k people are showing up at the Bank thus changing their approach to signings. My point it’s early so enjoy the ride.

I, for one–as if anyone should care–hope the club goes down the strategic road FC Dallas has taken: build from within, focus on youth, be careful with DP money. That all said, I’m all-in on the following aging stars: Xavi, Ya Ya Toure (I think the cold might make him move around more), Marco Fabian (maybe not “aging” per se, but still)… I could think of more, but why?
