News in Brief: Looking Back, Forward, and to Atlanta

    Year-end review

As we clean up from the holidays and open new word of the day calendars, it’s natural to reflect on the previous year. FiftyFive. One compiled the best Minnesota soccer stories of the year and the best players of the year. You can also check out what MLSSoccer.com thought were the best MLS stories of the year and a charming rendition of the MLS best XI.

    The year ahead

If looking back fondly on 2016 isn’t your style, perhaps musing on the year ahead suits you. MLS supporters groups share their resolutions for 2017 and others ponder how well their team will fare:

It’s never too early to get ready for the home opener

With just under ten weeks until the home opener, you can already start making plans for how to get there and where to park. If you won’t be taking a bus or a train, you can reserve a parking spot to park your car. It’s not the height of excitement, but excitement comes cheap in the offseason. If you’re not the planning type, but have opinions, you still have a couple of days to complete the Dark Clouds short survey about TCF Bank Stadium.

    Naming rights for Cloud City

Citing the prominent location near I-94, Charlie Walters figures the corporate naming rights to United’s new stadium in the Midway neighborhood could be worth $1 million per year.

    NASL updates

As reported in FiftyFive. One last week, the NASL owners are looking to move forward without Bill Peterson. If they are successful and keep the league alive, there is interest for an expansion team in Atlanta. Sounds like a good idea.

NASL to us: "We're really going to learn from the past and do things differently."
