News in Brief: Announcer Chris Lidholm Not Returning, U-16 Rule Change on the Horizon, and More

Longtime Minnesota soccer announcer Chris Lidholm is not returning for 2017

According to Lidholm’s tweet on Tuesday, he will not be returning for another year announcing for Minnesota United FC. His voice has been synonymous with Minnesota soccer for so long, it’ll be strange watching a United broadcast next year and not hear his “Raaa-mi-reeez!”

Good luck where ever you end up, Chris, and hopefully you can stay involved with soccer here in Minnesota. Minnesota soccer owes a deep debt of gratitude to you for everything you have done for the game here.

    Thank you.

US Soccer splitting U-16 into U-15 and U-16 teams

Big news out of the US Soccer Development Academy today as they will now separate the U-15s from the U-16s. https://t.co/4wNWfebD7Q

Evidently splitting the U-13s from U-14s was so successful they are moving that up. So the budget will pretty much double for every club and the players as well. Twice as many kids traveling, lodging, twice as many coaches, field time, dome time….

Minnesota United announce Russian-Norwegian Vadim Demidov

Welcome to the North, fam…#MNUFC pic.twitter.com/5gf08RLSFp

You can watch his intro video from the team above. My favorite part is when Deminov says, “I always give 100 percent and I always get tons of bruises after practices and games.” Sounds like another Greg Jordan, just an all out scrapper in the middle of the pitch.

    News Bits

    • Jeb Brovsky is back to running in his recovery. We here at FiftyFive. One are glad things are progressing well!
    • Cable Television entrepenuer Rocco Commisso has formally taken a controlling stake in the New York Cosmos.
    • Former Loon Daniel Mendes is playing with the Flint Florida Tropics indoor soccer team, which will hopefully lead to something for the winger during the outdoor season.
    • The Loons are in talks to add Finnish midfielder Rasmus Schüller, which this Finn could not be more excited about. It’s time to add some sisu in the midfield.
    • NPSL side Med City FC has announced that Canadian Luke Corey will be the first head coach for the Rochester, MN side.

    Finally…

Salivate over Minnesotan Mukwelle Akale’s stoppage time goal for Villarreal C. Then go back and read our feature on him.

I am a bit disappointed that Lidholm and Nordo were not retained.

Nord was great on the sideline with some of the best input during the games. He also knew when not to add comment — Mr Watson may not match. A Loons mistake not to keep Eric.
Chris on the other hand, had to go… by NASL standards he was below average at play-by-play. Nice guy, but…..
I do hope the Loons are taking a look at Cole Pepper — hands down the best in NASL… he could broadcast the phone book. I hope they don’t go for a name or a look… play-by-play should describe what’s happening on the field so even people who can’t see or are tuning in to a simulcast radio broadcast (as many MLS clubs do) know what’s happening. Don’t underestimate the ability of a good play-by-play caller to capture new fans of this team.
Alan’s color commentary was good also (above average compared to the NASL) so I hope the Loons keep him and he might make a good half time analyst. I am looking forward to see what Ms St.Aubin can add to the yet-to-be-named play-by-player.
