Pro/Rel Has Little to Offer Mid-Sized Cities
Categories: The AngleContinue Reading: Pro/Rel Has Little to Offer Mid-Sized CitiesLast weekend, New York Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch made some waves by saying, in an ESPN interview with Taylor Twellman, that he supported promotion and relegation (pro/rel) in American soccer. When asked for a reason, Marsch said, “because I think it just raises the stakes and gives so much hope to some of…

If fans are going to “trust the process,” just what is that process? One of the unique aspects of American sports is the process of “tanking,” by which a team…

Three Things: Minnesota United vs. D.C. United

It was a cathartic performance back to front. All the Loons who needed to score (Christian Ramirez, Abu Danladi, and Miguel Ibarra) scored. All the Loons who were missed on international…

Back to Basics
Categories: The AngleContinue Reading: Back to BasicsThis past week, Minnesota United turned in two toothless performances at home. This time, the beneficiary of the Loons’ struggles were the Houston Dynamo and the New York Red Bulls. Only thanks to some shameful finishing from the former did the Loons earn a point from these two matches. Minnesota’s scoreless streak now runs to…

An Ode to John Alvbåge: Instagram Star
Categories: The AngleContinue Reading: An Ode to John Alvbåge: Instagram StarWhen Minnesota United signed John Alvbåge, I was a bit disappointed. A 34-year-old coming off a disappointing season in the Allsvenskan? Really? When I saw him play, I was concerned. I think he moves his feet too much, prioritizing constant positional adjustments over simply being set for the shot. And when he started the year helpless…

Categories: NewsContinue Reading: Two Arguments: Are Johan and Kevin Venegas Underrated Contributors or Confounding Liabilities? The Two Venegases Saturday evening’s match against the Vancouver Whitecaps was the first time that both of Minnesota United FC’s players named Venegas (Johan and Kevin) were on the field together. Both started the game, with the former lasting 85 minutes and the latter playing the full 90 in a 2-2 draw. Plenty of Loons have…
