In early May the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) kicked off State Cup. What is State Cup? It’s a youth soccer tournament that allows the best of the best in MYSA to compete for a championship of each age group for both boys and girls. Winning a State Cup Championship is not only an honor to its players and clubs, it also means the teams advance to regional competition.
Today, (Friday, June 24) the 14 Minnesota teams who were crowned champions at their age level start competition in US Youth Soccer’s Region II Midwest Championships in Westfield, Ind. The competition will continue through Wednesday, June 29th, with a champion determined in each age group. Region II includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio North, Ohio South, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Any team that wins their Region II Championship will earn a berth to the 2016 US Youth Soccer National Championships, July 26-31, at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas. One of the 14 national crowns awarded is the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest trophy in youth sports, dating back to 1935 with the inaugural youth championships.
