In this week’s recap of Minnesotans playing professionally: Tyler David finds the back of the net for the first time as a pro, the NWSL season ends for Kassey Kallman and Cat Parkhill, and our players in MLS eye playoff spots.
Although his team did not qualify for the playoffs, Tyler David‘s last game of the season was one to remember. In his previous 21 appearances, David had never played a full game nor had he scored a goal. But in Saint Louis FC’s 2-2 tie with OKC Energy FC, he ticked both those off of his list. The game started out poorly for STLFC when they found themselves a goal down 18 seconds in, but they pulled level in the 21st minute. David gave his side the lead two minutes later when A.J. Cochran headed a St. Louis corner back across the face of goal. The ball deflected off David and sneaked in at the far post. OKC answered back in the 26th minute and the scoreline would keep until the final whistle.
The season also ended this past weekend for Kassey Kallman and the Boston Breakers. It was a disappointing season that resulted in a number of unfortunate team and league records, but also ended with Kallman extending her streak of consecutive minutes played in the NWSL. Boston’s final game of 2016 ended in a 4-0 loss to Western New York Flash. The Breakers had a chance to prevent the Flash from reaching the playoffs with a win, but after giving up three goals in the first half, there was little that could be done to play spoiler.
Eric Miller and the Colorado Rapids look to be heading to the playoffs in the Western Conference, but they have not guaranteed their spot. Over the weekend, the Rapids took and lost the lead against Vancouver Whitecaps FC three times in their 3-3 result at home. Miller played the full game at right back and played a much more defensive first half as the Rapids played to protect an early lead and then pushed forward as the teams traded goals in the second. Miller had a decent defensive performance with five interceptions, five recoveries, a pair of recoveries and tackles, and one blocked shot. However, his positioning led him to be somewhat at fault for the Whitecaps’ last two goals.
The New England Revolution’s playoff hopes took a hit on Sunday with a 2-0 loss to Columbus Crew SC. The Revs are just below the red line, but also have played more games than the other teams around them. Teal Bunbury was on the bench for the fourth straight game, but was given more time this week to try to impact the game. Bunbury entered the game in the 55th minute to give New England more speed on the flanks, but unfortunately he did not get on the ball much and only managed one shot on goal.
Cody Cropper was also on the bench for New England and has yet to play for the Revs.
Calum Mallace was an unused substitute for the Montreal Impact’s 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls.
Cat Parkhill watched FC Kansas City beat the Orlando Pride 2-0 from the bench. Parkhill finished her first NWSL season without making an appearance.
