Gopher to host NC State in NCAA Tournament

After winning Big Ten regular season and tournament championships, Minnesota will be hosting NC State later this week as a No. 4 seed in the NCAA National Tournament.

On Saturday the Gophers will be looking to defend their home field in tournament play once again. But this time it’s on a slightly bigger stage.

Today, Minnesota was announced as a No. 4 seed and host for the NCAA Tournament. With two straight wins in the Big Ten Tournament at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, the Gophers look to be the odds-on favorite as they take on NC State.

Not only are the Gophers currently on a nine game unbeaten streak, they also have the added incentive of hosting a second round match if they can top NC State. After getting knocked out in the second round last year, home field advantage could certainly make a deeper run a reality.

A No. 4 seed in their quarter of the bracket equates to being seen as a top-16 team nationally by the selection committee. Gophers are currently ranked…

No. 8 – NSCAA Coaches Poll
No. 11 – Top Drawer Soccer
      No. 18 – RPI

Seems like that RPI prevented the U of M from getting a No. 3 seed? I guess their strength of schedule hurt them a bit with the selection committee?

An aside, BYU looks hard done by. No. 3 (Top Drawer), No. 4 (Coaches Poll with two first-place votes), and No. 10 (RPI) lands them only a No. 4 seed in their respective quarter of the bracket.

Know Gophers have yet to make the Elite Eight… if there are no upsets, U of M will meet Stanford — No. 1 (RPI), No. 2 (Coaches Poll with five first-place votes), No. 2 (Top Drawer) — in the Sweet Sixteen.
