Minnesota United to Face Atlanta for Home Opener

The Loons will make their first home MLS appearance on March 12th at TCF Bank Stadium against Atlanta United.

Minnesota will face their fellow expansion club Atlanta United in their first home match. The two clubs have taken two different approaches to expansion with Atlanta splashing cash on young South American talent while Minnesota has focused initially on working with their existing talent.

The Loons’ first match in MLS will be away to the Portland Timbers on March 3rd, a Friday night matchup that will be nationally televised. This match will also be the first of the MLS season, a big spotlight for the expansion-side Loons. Minnesota and Portland have a long history between them from their USL days.

The rest of the MLS schedule is expected to be announced later in January.

I gotta say this whole expansion process would not have been as interesting so far if we didn’t have an expansion rival, even if the rivalry fizzles out over time. All the more so since we get to go mano a mano so early.

God this first season is going to be a hot, red bloodbath for MN. My hopes for this season:

      1. Don’t finish last in MLS.
      2. Emerge with a few bright players to build around for the future.
      3. Emerge with an obvious style/identity that can inform our approach for the next few years.
      4. Deeply engage in the community to get consistent attendance, media coverage, and enthusiasm despite whatever results we earn.

How are we going to know which United won?
