Bill Edwards’ suit moves forward against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and more NASL news
From Empire of Soccer:
“Edwards alleges that an oral agreement was agreed upon to send the Strikers an emergency $80,000 in order for the team to be able to host its Sept. 3 match against the New York Cosmos. MSP sent the Strikers a promissory note for the emergency loan shortly after, but the Strikers did not sign it.”
This could end up being very bad for NASL and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. This is on the same day that Bob Williams of the Telegraph reported that the NASL would be heading in a different direction by introducing financial safety measures. The league looks to be expanding next season, at least into San Diego. Demba Ba and Eden Hazard are reportedly part of an NASL ownership group in San Diego.
Midfielder Juliano Vicentini will not return to Minnesota United FC
Midfielder Juliano Vicentini announced through Facebook that he would not be returning to Minnesota United FC this season. When playing the double pivot, Vicentini was able to display a remarkable ability to distribute the ball and maintain possession under pressure. He was a key component in the team winning the Spring title in 2014. Good luck to him where ever he ends up.

Loons on tour: international duty report
While Minnesota United FC was drafting three new players, three current or potential Loons were plying their trade for their respective national teams.
Franscico Calvo started in the first game for Costa Rica in the Copacentroamerica against El Salvator on Friday. Johan Venegas came in as a substitute in the scoreless draw.
On Sunday against Belize, Calvo got to rest while Venegas started and scored his team’s second goal, off a rebound.

On the other side of the world on Friday, Rasmus Schüller’s Finnish side was losing a friendly 2-0 to Slovenia in Abu Dhabi. The Minnesota target played the entire game in midfield for the Eagle-owls.
Callum Williams will be Minnesota’s play-by-play announcer
While we found out last week that beloved announcer and all around nice guy Chris Lidholm wouldn’t be returning as the play-by-play announcer, his replacement hadn’t been announced yet. Though not official, Andy Greder is reporting that Callum Williams will be Minnesota’s next play-by-play announcer.
Callum Williams has worked for a number of outlets, including as the play-by-play announcer for Sporting Kansas City for four years. You can check out a video of his calls below.

News bits
- An interesting report on Minnesota United FC on Northwest Community Television includes a comment from Bill McGuire that the furthest seat will be 125 feet from the field in the team’s new stadium.
- Reddit user Bleakmidwinter made a excellent single sheet Minnesota United FC schedule.
- Landon Donovan told Jonathan Tannenwald that it’s still “up in the air” if he’ll play this season. Still think Minnesota should have taken a flyer on Donovan with their last pick of the expansion draft.
- St. Louis FC has reportedly ended their relationship with the Chicago Fire for this season. Could a deal be in place soon between Minnesota and St. Louis? It would be the closest USL side to Minnesota.
- Former MNUFC player Mike Ambersley announced his retirement from soccer. Ambersley only played the second half of the 2013 season with the Loons, but I have a personal soft spot for the forward due to purchasing an away Ambersley jersey at a locker room sale after the season for $25.
- Big changes are in store for the CONCACAF Champions League, including the possibility of a return to a knockout tournament format.
