News In Brief: Vicentini Leaving, Edwards Suing Strikers, Draft Roundup and More

Bill Edwards’ suit moves forward against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and more NASL news

    From Empire of Soccer:

“Edwards alleges that an oral agreement was agreed upon to send the Strikers an emergency $80,000 in order for the team to be able to host its Sept. 3 match against the New York Cosmos. MSP sent the Strikers a promissory note for the emergency loan shortly after, but the Strikers did not sign it.”

This could end up being very bad for NASL and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. This is on the same day that Bob Williams of the Telegraph reported that the NASL would be heading in a different direction by introducing financial safety measures. The league looks to be expanding next season, at least into San Diego. Demba Ba and Eden Hazard are reportedly part of an NASL ownership group in San Diego.

Midfielder Juliano Vicentini will not return to Minnesota United FC

Midfielder Juliano Vicentini announced through Facebook that he would not be returning to Minnesota United FC this season. When playing the double pivot, Vicentini was able to display a remarkable ability to distribute the ball and maintain possession under pressure. He was a key component in the team winning the Spring title in 2014. Good luck to him where ever he ends up.

    Minnesota United FC draft roundup

    • Megan Ryan has a human interest story in the Star Tribune detailing Abu Danlani’s journey to Minnesota United FC.
    • Reporter Sam Stejskal got behind the scenes access while Minnesota United FC participated in their first MLS superdraft.
    • Article from Winston-Salem Journal on former Wake Forest goalkeeper Alec Ferrell being drafted by Minnesota United FC. Reports are that Ferrell could turn out to be a quality MLS starting goalkeeper.

Finally, enjoy Abu Danlani’s speech after he was drafted by Minnesota United FC again.

Loons on tour: international duty report

While Minnesota United FC was drafting three new players, three current or potential Loons were plying their trade for their respective national teams.

Franscico Calvo started in the first game for Costa Rica in the Copacentroamerica against El Salvator on Friday. Johan Venegas came in as a substitute in the scoreless draw.

On Sunday against Belize, Calvo got to rest while Venegas started and scored his team’s second goal, off a rebound.

On the other side of the world on Friday, Rasmus Schüller’s Finnish side was losing a friendly 2-0 to Slovenia in Abu Dhabi. The Minnesota target played the entire game in midfield for the Eagle-owls.

Callum Williams will be Minnesota’s play-by-play announcer

While we found out last week that beloved announcer and all around nice guy Chris Lidholm wouldn’t be returning as the play-by-play announcer, his replacement hadn’t been announced yet. Though not official, Andy Greder is reporting that Callum Williams will be Minnesota’s next play-by-play announcer.

Callum Williams has worked for a number of outlets, including as the play-by-play announcer for Sporting Kansas City for four years. You can check out a video of his calls below.

Minnesotan Mukwelle Akale scores a goal in Villarreal reserve team action

Mukwelle Akale played out on the left for the Villarreal CF C team. The striker scored his team’s first goal and is very active in the teams 3-1 win. The full match is below, if you have two hours to spare.

    News bits

    • An interesting report on Minnesota United FC on Northwest Community Television includes a comment from Bill McGuire that the furthest seat will be 125 feet from the field in the team’s new stadium.
    • Reddit user Bleakmidwinter made a excellent single sheet Minnesota United FC schedule.
    • Landon Donovan told Jonathan Tannenwald that it’s still “up in the air” if he’ll play this season. Still think Minnesota should have taken a flyer on Donovan with their last pick of the expansion draft.
    • St. Louis FC has reportedly ended their relationship with the Chicago Fire for this season. Could a deal be in place soon between Minnesota and St. Louis? It would be the closest USL side to Minnesota.
    • Former MNUFC player Mike Ambersley announced his retirement from soccer. Ambersley only played the second half of the 2013 season with the Loons, but I have a personal soft spot for the forward due to purchasing an away Ambersley jersey at a locker room sale after the season for $25.
    • Big changes are in store for the CONCACAF Champions League, including the possibility of a return to a knockout tournament format.

Juliano Vicentini wasn’t a surprise announcement at 35 years old, remember he had only played 30 games in the previous 5 years before get got to Minnesota (at 32) and played 60+ in 3 years with us.

Not a surprise, shouldn’t have come with the team to MLS, but I’m still sad because he embodied a lot of what that 2014 team was.

Agree. I think 2016 would have looked a lot worse if he wasn’t here as well.

I’ll miss his ability to turn any sort of contact into a foul against the opposition.

I do love me a scrappy goal. Keep ’em coming, Johan!

I’m glad our internationals will be coming into preseason fit and ready.

Thanks for posting. Listen carefully to the sampling of Callum Williams. A good talker, but there’s not much play-by-play. I was hoping the Loons would hire someone who actually called the play. This was Chris’s weakness and, from the sample above, Callum may be worse. Play-by-play should describe what’s happening on the field so even people who can’t see or are tuning in to a simulcast radio broadcast (as many MLS clubs do) know what’s happening. Don’t underestimate the ability of a good play-by-play caller to capture new fans of this team. If the games are on the radio, simulcast with Collum will NOT work.
In the NASL, Cole Pepper is the best play-by-play.
Nordo was great on the sideline with some of the best input during the games. He also knew when not to add comment — Mr Watson may not match. A Loons mistake not to keep Eric.
Alan’s color commentary was good also (above average compared to the NASL) so I hope the Loons keep him as he might make a good half time analyst. I am looking forward to seeing what Ms St.Aubin can add; and hope Callum can focus on the play call and allow her to do the color commentary.

Not keeping Nordo is a big mistake. In my opinion, he was one of the best sideline reporters for any sport.

He was good, but looked out of place or uncomfortable in front of the camera.

I believe his abilities were more than enough to make up for his look on camera. That is something that could get fixed over time, and as a sideline reporter is not of the greatest importance. Of the three, I think not keeping Nordo is the biggest error of the bunch by MNUFC.

I almost completly disagree about the describing of the play on the field as a weakness of Chris’ – Describing every single pass for TV is just silly, radio is another story. We don’t have radio broadcast so why do that.

Play by Play should know when to be quiet.

Dude, you need to listen carefully. I’ve worked in TV for a long, long time and you couldn’t be more wrong about this guy. You DO NOT need to identify every single play by play on TV. The audience can see for themselves where the action is. With the standard of some of the PxP’s in MLS I can’t believe anyone would ever even think of criticizing people like Cal or Arlo. Both are the best i’ve ever heard at MLS level and Minnesota United have just signed someone who will come in and instantly be the best PxP in MLS. Maybe you’re a friend of Chris Lindholm or something, I don’t know. I suggest you listen to Callum’s radio PxP reel or I don’t know, crazy idea, maybe let him call a few games before being critical. People in KC made the same mistake when he came in as a 21 year old. 4 years later, he’s calling EPL and MLS for global audience. I like seeing young announcers come through, I love it when they come good and chose to be in our league.

How are Demba Ba and/or Eden Hazard “former players”?
