News in Brief: Sunil Gulati Rules Out Re-Election, Diego Valeri Wins MVP, and More

Sunil Gulati rules out re-election bid

Sunil Gulati has announced that he will not seek re-election as president of U.S. Soccer. This will bring his 12-year tenure to an end. Calls for him to step down resounded throughout the US Soccer world after the USMNT failed to reach the 2018 World Cup. Even though he will no longer be at the head of the USSF, he will still be on the board in a non-voting role until at least 2022. He is expected to support Kathy Carter, the president of Soccer United Marketing who recently announced her candidacy.

Boxall relishes chance against former coach

The former manager of New Zealand’s men’s national team has made his way stateside. The former All Whites manager, Anthony Hudson, will take the reins at Colorado and fellow Kiwi Michael Boxall is looking forward to the chance to play against his old manager. Boxall arrived at Minnesota over the summer transfer window and made 12 appearances for the Loons.

    Diego Valeri named MVP

Diego Valeri was named the Landon Donavan MLS MVP. The Argentine broke multiple MLS records this season. He scored in nine consecutive games and had the most goals ever by a midfielder, 21. Truly a well-deserved award for Valeri. This is his first regular season MVP win in MLS.

    He rose above the rest.

Cookie Monster is great and all; however, if we’re being honest, I think Grover has a higher ceiling as an all-around player. Cookie Monster would fit NYCFC’s mold of the older star whose best days are behind him. I thought MLS was moving beyond these types of signings…
