The inaugural Premier League of America season opened this weekend with four matches, including two contests in two days for Grand Rapids Ole SC. There were a total of 17 goals scored, with every team in action finding their way onto the scoresheet. Three of four home teams secured victory, with only Ole SC suffering defeat at home in what was their second match in as many days. RWB Adria’s Derick Huffman distinguished himself with a hat trick against Carpathia FC.

Milwaukee kicked off the PLA season with a narrow 2-1 win over Cedar Rapids just a couple of hours after wrapping up the Wisconsin Amateur Cup. Danny Jarosz and Logan Andryk were involved in both Milwaukee goals, with Andryk scoring the first-ever PLA goal off an assist from Jarosz in the 20th minute. Andryk then took a corner in the 58th minute and found Jarosz for a 2-0 lead. Antonello Paradiso found the back of the net in the 84th minute for Cedar Rapids, which made things uncomfortable for the hosts, but Bavarians closed out the match and escaped with 3 points.

The hosts scored just before and after halftime to win their first match of the season 2-1 over Grand Rapids Ole SC. Oakland County’s Danny Dragoi found the back of the net off a deflected cross in the 45th minute, giving OCFC a 1-0 lead going into the break. Shortly after the second half whistle blew, Shawn Sloan curled a shot past Ole’s keeper from 20 yards out to put Oakland County up 2-0. County was in control for much of the second half before Job Potter got one back for Grand Rapids in the 80th minute. The visitors couldn’t come all the way back, however, and the match ended as a win for Oakland County.

Grand Rapids Ole SC wrapped up a tough weekend with their second loss in fewer than 24 hours. Toledo United headed back to Ohio 5-1 winners after a dominant performance in Michigan. Grand Rapids’ Matt Jackson put in a 9th minute own goal, creating a hole out of which Ole never managed to dig itself. Charlie Rolls doubled the lead shortly after and Kyle Breitmeyer made it 3-0 within 20 minutes. Ole answered with some pressure before Breitmeyer put Toledo up 4-0 with his second goal of the match. Grand Rapids got on the board very near to halftime on a Brogan Shrimpton goal, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback. Rolls assisted on a Christian Suthers goal five minutes after the start of the second half and Toledo saw out the match to a 5-1 finish.
